One of the early and simple methods of using solar power is the use of greenhousees. A greenhouse is a building that gathers energy from the sun and traps the heat inside a building that  uses special materials such as glass or plastics to trap the energy from the sun. Therefore, the greenhouse can provide warmth in relatively cold climates.

You might find it interesting that the idea of using solar thermal power is not particularly modern. Ancient writings of Chaldean and Egyptian cultures indicated they knew how to harness solar power in simple ways. We are learning new ways to harness solar power and our culture is increasingly counting on solar power to help us through the new millenium.
